Top 5 reasons websites load slow

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 22:21

slow-300x185

Slow loading websites are still the number one reason why people leave a website before buying, here are some flags for what might be slowing down your website.

The top 5 reasons a website loads slow:

  1. The amount and size of resources on the web page like widgets, link lists, images, videos. The browser has to rethink for each item so it is better to use a similar theme for each web page.
  2. Images and Videos that are not properly optimized and re-sized is a very close second. There is free tools online if you do not have a program to compress your videos and images.
  3. The database search executed while the site loads. Static pages always load faster then database driven web pages so try to use as many static web pages as possible. Most blogs have a plug-ins to make their pages static just for this reason and because static websites is more reliable then a database driven site.
  4. Flash driven sites are known for lagging and sometimes crashing browsers, try to only use flash for videos, tutorials, banners, headers, and examples. Full flash sites will put you in the lowest loading speed category quick.
  5. Overloaded servers can cause site slow downs. If you have a dedicated server you might want to keep your high resource sites to about 5 to server around there the speed of the server can be effected. Also contacting Baithost to have us look over the server for free is a good way to make sure the server is as fast as possible. Be careful with mass budget hosting, they tend to overload their servers to make up for their cheap costs.

We want your feedback and suggestions!

Over the past six months we’ve grown quite a bit after the acquisition of Baithost, and as a result we want feedback from current (and prospective) customers regarding our services. Since we’ve grown significantly we would like to hear from you guys to let us know if you think we’ve been able to maintain the quality service we strive for. It’s a slippery slope when a company grows quickly and as a result some companies let that get in the way of the service – we don’t want this to happen.

What do you think we can do to improve? Do you think we’ve let any part of our service degrade in quality? Do you have any gripes or pet peeves? Please let us know! We love hearing from you guys, without you we’re nothing!

Here are a few ideals we’ve always had and have tried to stick with:

  • Communication
  • High quality hosting
  • Going above and beyond
  • Being candid
  • Being human
  • Having fun

So everyone, how are we doing? Please send your feedback to feedback@baithost.com.my.

Looking forward to hear your feedback!

Softaculous Doing Great

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 0:25

We added Softaculous recently as we were becoming more frustrated by the lack of updates to Fantastico.  To go along with Fantastico’s lack of scripts it was months behind in some cases on versions of scripts which is unacceptable when dealing with exploits.  It appears the only thing Fantastico really has going for it these days is it’s name as we still have customers using it over Softaculous even though Fantastico might even be installing an older version of a script.  So it’s definitely not something we’re removing as a feature as it stands on it’s brand and if we did remove it we’d be losing customers.  So just how great has Softaculous been over the first week of us using it?  Well here’s a summary of all the script updates we’ve seen:

LifeType 1.2.10 – Successful
phpMyFAQ 2.6.2 – Successful
DokuWiki 2009-12-25c – Successful
Piwigo 2.0.8 – Successful
phpMyFAQ 2.6.1 – Successful
Noahs Classifieds 4.1.0 – Successful
PmWiki 2.2.10 – Successful
NetOffice 2.5.3 – Successful
Serendipity 1.5.1 – Successful
MediaWiki 1.15.1 – Successful

That is pretty amazing in comparison to Fantastico which never could have so many updates out in a just over a week.  We just hope more customers will make use of Softaculous over Fantastico which is just alive due to reputation not actual quality of the software.  Which is unfortunate for Softaculous which is really impressive with their script library and how quickly they can update scripts.

Linux Vs Windows Web Hosting, does it make a difference?

Thursday, January 7, 2010 22:59

One of the most confusing decisions that one has to make when entering a web hosting business is how to choose which platform they will use to host sites. There are a few options available, but the most commonly used formats are Linux and Windows web hosts. There is a plethora of generators and data that relates to web hosting, but the bulk of it is based on biased writing and at times is written by Windows or Linux employees themselves. Through a few hours of search engine based research, it becomes apparent that there really isn’t a more worthy or beneficial platform to use. Whichever one you decide to utilise, it does not tend to make as big of an impact as other more particular decisions.

The Microsoft Company formulated and possesses the rights to the Windows operating system. Linux on the other hand is an unrestricted source and is often provided at a very cheap, if not free, rate. Essentially, you will be looking at a much higher cost to run a Windows hosting program as opposed to Linux. While the initial cost of the Linux program works out to be less, the Windows platform, in turn, is less costly to execute. In the end, through the start up cost to the running and execution costs, both platforms work out to be almost identical in price.

While it has become evident that both platforms offer similar packages for a similar price, you will still find many people that prefer the Windows server package. Often times, this is only due to the fact that their personal computer runs on Windows, so they tend to be familiar with the company. This is simply a matter of personal opinion and is not a fact by any means. The admittance to your internet account will most likely be via file transfer protocol or a control panel, and both platforms support these techniques using the same tactics. The principal difference with respect to Linux and Windows is simply that the file transfer protocol instructions will differ slightly. These instructions differ in the Linux operating system and can at times, lead to computer error content. While this can be a problem at times, it happens too infrequently to make a major difference.

The stability and reliability of both programs has been the subject of countless debates in recent years. The major discredit against Windows is that is considered to be unsafe, due to the amount of faults that have been discovered. The fact of the matter is that because it is the most widely practiced system for household personal computers, many people spend countless hours searching for faults in the program. The Linux system is less used, therefore less people research or peruse for faults and or errors. However, as Linux tens to be the more common host type, it has a higher rate of viruses and or hack attacks that have been implemented onto the system.

In the end, it is not simply a matter of which platform is safer or more reliable. The stability of your hosting program while rely mostly on the abilities and security provided by the technical executives employed by your hosting company. Both programs are almost equal in cost, and both provide a number of security issues. If you have a major concern when it comes to security, then it is most important for you ensure that your hosting firm is experienced and respected throughout the internet community.

10 tips on choosing a web host

Thursday, January 7, 2010 20:54
Posted in category Tutorials & Guides

When you begin to look for a host for your website or dedicated server you are immediately assailed by numbers; hard drive space, CPU speed, amount of dedicated RAM, bandwidth and more. Hosting companies today try to sell you hosting on the back of the technical specification.

It’s easy to believe that a good understanding of maths is all you’d need to pick the best web server hosting company. However, to make a good choice you need to resist the urge to leap for the best spec offered at the lowest price.

In fact, the numbers are just a minor part of the equation that you have to solve to find a good website or server host. The human element of the hosting company and the written agreement between yourself and the web hosting company are equally as important.

Here’s what to consider when choosing a web host:

  • Service levels – What you get for your money is largely determined by your host’s Service Level Agreement. Make sure you read it BEFORE things go wrong, so you know what will happen to correct a problem and what rights you have.
Beware, I’ve seen a number of Malaysian companies offering shared web hosting WITHOUT an SLA – you should avoid such offerings entirely. It’s like buying a car without a guarantee that it’ll even start up!
For more info on Service Level Agreements click the link.
  • Tech support – You need to find out if support is 24/7, provided by phone and/or email. Is the telephone support number a premium rate line? Are the support staff trained engineers or is it outsourced to an Indian call centre? Here at Baithost our lines are manned 24/7 by qualified engineers.
  • Contract length – Beware of web hosting companies that tie you into long-term contracts for simple hosting like shared web hosting or VPS. Where’s their incentive to provide you with good service if you cannot terminate the agreement easily. Intrahost’s agreements below dedicated server level are from month-to-month so you are not tied into a long-term deal.
  • Scalability – This is tied to the flexibility of your agreement with your web hosting company. If you need to change your hosting requirements how easy is it to do so? Is there a financial penalty for doing so?
  • Nature of your hosting company – Is your hosting company a real host with their own servers in a dedicated data centre or are they merely a one-man band, reselling space on someone else’s servers that could be located anywhere in the world?  Are you comfortable with your info being stored on a web server in say, Africa?
Do they have the expertise to solve a problem or are they relying on a supplier’s engineers? What happens if the one-man band suffers illness? Will he be there at 3am or during public holidays?
Perhaps worst of all, what if the host company goes under? Will your data remain accessible in that event? What happens if the server is repossessed by a leasing company or the data centre shuts off connectivity or power?
  • Location – often overlooked, but you are far better off having a hosting company in the same country as your own location. If you are in the Malaysia you have a raft of consumer legislation and local government departments dedicated to ensuring you get a fair deal for your money. All of which is lost if you go outside the Malaysia. Even if you choose to host in advanced countries like the USA and UK do you really want to try and resolve a legal difficulty from three thousands miles away in another time zone?
Another reason for choosing a local host is that search engines like Google are becoming far more localised in creating their SERPs, and the physical location of your web server can play a major part in the decision by the search engine of when to display your results.
  • Data centre qualities: The web host’s servers must be housed in data centres rather than, for example, their own offices. The Malaysian data centres are graded and you are looking for Tier 2 or greater. The grading represents qualities like:
    • Resilience – In order to guarantee 100% network uptime the centre needs at least two connections to the internet
    • Security – Has the data centre taken fire and intruder security measures?
    • Power – has it alternative power supplies? Usually UPS and diesel generators.
  • Performance monitoring – you should try to obtain performance data on your proposed web host – this is often displayed on their website
  • Testimonials – these are used by many sites; don’t be afraid to look up the people providing testimonials and ask them to confirm they still feel the same way about the host. Look up their website and gauge for yourself the end user experience of a website served by your proposed hosting company. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve looked up testimonials and received a 404 error page!
  • Guarantee – the SLA should offer a money-back, uptime guarantee – if there is no money-back then it’s NOT a GUARANTEE is it? Baithost’s SLA contains its 99.99% server uptime guarantee
